New Resources for Nature Groups from the People’s Plan for Nature
Nature in the UK is in crisis
Nature in the UK is in crisis. 38 million birds have vanished from our skies in the last 50 years. 97% of our wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s. ¼ of all mammals are at risk of extinction. The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.
But, nature is resilient, and we have just enough of the natural world left to help it recover.
The People’s Plan for Nature
The People’s Plan for Nature is a vision for nature in the UK and a roadmap for what we need to do to protect and renew it.
The People’s Plan was created by the people of the UK. It started with ‘The National Conversation’ – a call for ideas about how we can save nature, which received nearly 30,000 responses. Then, 103 people with different backgrounds and experiences were randomly chosen to come together and form the People’s Assembly for Nature. Over four weekends between November 2022 and February 2023, the People’s Assembly learnt from experts about the nature crisis and together, created the People’s Plan.
The People’s Plan calls for urgent, immediate action – from governments, businesses, charities, organisations, farmers and communities – to fundamentally change how we value nature.
How to drive action for nature in your local community
So, how can people get involved in the People’s Plan and start driving action for nature?
Over the last few months, our sister organisation (The Social Change Agency) has been working with WWF, RSPB and the People’s Plan for Nature to create resources to help groups protect and restore nature. They spoke to nature activists and local grassroots organisations, to hear from them what they wanted support with, and got insights from groups already working on nature from across the UK.
Together, they created…
- Engaging Local Government: A pack with advice on how to engage local politicians with your cause. This includes the different kinds of local government operating in each region of the UK, tactics for engaging local politicians and success stories from different nature groups.
- How to engage your community: A workshop plan that can be used to facilitate a session in your local community, to start planning what action you can take locally. This includes tips for running a session, a workshop outline and additional resources.
- People’s Plan for Nature video: An explainer video on the People’s Plan, with background on how the plan was created and ideas for how communities can respond at a local level.
All of the resources are now live and available to download here. If you’re an individual activist or part of a grassroots group working on nature protection, we encourage you to have a look and share them with your networks.
