What’s the job?

Brent Giving is looking for someone to join their small but ambitious team as a Communications and Events Officer.

Brent Giving is a resident-led grantmaking organisation based in the London Borough of Brent. They were founded on a radical idea: that the people closest to the problems should be the ones making the decisions about where funding goes. Their model puts real power in the hands of community Ambassadors from diverse backgrounds, and in their first year we helped them to distribute over £80,000 to grassroots projects tackling poverty across Harlesden, South Kilburn, Stonebridge, and St Raphaels.

As Brent Giving enter their second year, they have confirmed funding of approximately £700,000 over three years, supported by funders including City Bridge TrustThe Football AssociationQuintain and Sovereign Housing. They are growing, and need someone who can help to tell that story.

As Communications and Events Officer, you will play a central role in how Brent Giving shows up in the community and online. From delivering social media and newsletter content, to helping get the fundraising message out to the public, to supporting community events on the ground, you’ll be at the heart of how they communicate our work. You will report to the Programme Manager and work closely with the Fundraising Manager and Director.

This is a hands-on role where no two days look the same. You’ll be equally comfortable crafting a compelling Instagram post as you are setting up chairs at a community event. If you’re someone who sees what needs doing and just gets on with it, this could be the role for you.

Who are Brent Giving?

Brent Giving exist because they believe that community members, not just professionals, should have real power over how funding is spent in their neighbourhoods.

Their Ambassador Panel is made up of residents from across some of the most underserved areas of Brent. They review applications, make funding decisions, and hold the organisation to account. Everything they do is shaped by their voices and their lived experience.

They are a small, dynamic team that works closely together. Everyone gets involved and contributes beyond their core role to make things happen for our community. Brent Giving is proud to be fiscally hosted by The Social Change Nest.

About the Role

Brent Giving are looking for a Communications and Events Officer who is equally comfortable crafting compelling content as they are setting up a community event space. This is a hands-on role in a small team where no two days look the same.

You will be given a communications strategy to work from, and they need someone who can confidently deliver against it, contributing ideas and feedback to help it evolve. You will not be waiting for someone to tell you what to post or when. You will be proactive, creative, and ready to shape how Brent Giving shows up in the community and online.

Fundraising is also an important part of this role. You will not be expected to design fundraising campaigns from scratch, but you will be responsible for delivering the public facing fundraising messaging that the team provides. This means the communications speak to two audiences: the communities we serve and the people and organisations that support our work. Everything Brent Giving puts out should reflect both.

Alongside communications, you will play an active role in the operational and events side of the organisation. That means being present at community events, supporting logistics, greeting attendees, setting up rooms, and doing whatever it takes to make  events run smoothly. If you are someone who sees what needs doing and just gets on with it, this role is for you.

Using AI in your application

We recognise that AI tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of professional life, including the job application process. While we neither encourage nor discourage the use of AI in your application, we believe it’s important for candidates to be aware of both the potential benefits and drawbacks. Here are some key points to consider:

Potential Benefits of Using AI

  1. Reduces barriers: AI can help individuals with disabilities or those who are not native English speakers in the application process.
  2. Guidance: Can provide suggestions on what you might want to include in your response.
  3. Feedback: Can offer insights on how you could improve your responses.

Potential Drawbacks of Using AI

  1. Generic content: Can result in similar wording appearing across multiple applications, making them feel less unique.
  2. Inaccuracies: AI is sometimes overly creative with facts and may provide inaccurate information.
  3. Loss of personal touch: Your individual experiences and personality might not shine through if AI is relied on too heavily.
  4. Environmental impact:  AI consumes significant environmental resources with every prompt contributing to this.

Remember, the most successful applications are those that genuinely reflect your skills, experiences, and personality. Whether you choose to use AI tools or not, make sure you check your responses thoroughly and ensure that your application accurately represents you as a candidate.
