About The Social Change Nest

At The Social Change Nest (SCN), we’re radically transforming the funding landscape and strengthening civil society. We remove the financial and administrative barriers – like bank accounts and legal structures – that often prevent communities, grassroots groups and informal movements from accessing funding and focusing on their core mission. We also work closely with funders, enabling them to support social action with confidence and transparency.

We currently support over 700 groups across the UK and abroad addressing issues such as social injustice, climate, housing, wellbeing and animal rights. We are at the forefront of fiscal hosting in Europe and, since our inception in 2020, we have supported groups in securing over £50 million in funding, helping them take advantage of opportunities that may have otherwise been unavailable.

We work with all types of social movements and community groups, from climate to housing, wellbeing and animal rights. Read more about this here

The Social Change Nest is part of The Social Change Group. We are a Disability Confident Employer, and an accredited Living Wage Employer.

We will be holding a Q&A session about the Advisory Collective on 25th August 2026 at 12:00-13:00 for anyone interested in applying.

About The Community Nest

Against the backdrop of rising authoritarianism and the erosion of civil rights, The Community Nest aims to bring activists, allies and community-minded citizens to be better resourced and interconnected. The Community Nest works off the principles of movement generosity and reciprocal learning, by creating spaces that allow for building the collective power of the 700+ groups that are fiscally hosted at the Social Change Nest, to build a resilient and well-organised grassroots movement.

After a one year pilot of The Community Nest, we know that the community and movement building strand of our work needs to be at the heart of our ecosystem here at the Social Change Nest. As such, the emergence of an Advisory Collective is a key next step in the further development of The Community Nest.

The Advisory Collective

Purpose

We are committed to being ecosystem and movement led. The Community Nest will  weave together the collective knowledge, skills and learning of our network and should therefore be shaped  by the wisdom, needs and ambitions of our fiscally hosted groups. To aid us in this goal, we are assembling an Advisory Collective  formed by members  of our ecosystem.

Aim

The Advisory Collective’s expertise and insights will guide our stewardship of The Community Nest, to build a resilient and well-organised grassroots movement.

Objectives

The Advisory Collective will…

  • Influence The Community Nest’s priorities through sharing insights and expertise.
  • Provide feedback on the spaces, structures and design methods and approaches proposed for The Community Nest.
  • Act as Community Nest Ambassadors in their everyday work and roles.

Responsibilities
Reciprocal learning

  • Contribute to reciprocal learning through information exchange, shared reflection and constructive disagreement to support and challenge each other and The Community Nest team.
  • Commit to naming power in the space.
  • Enter into discussions with good intentions, respect and openness.
  • Hold patience for relationship building with other panel members and The Community Nest team.

Governance

  • Hold the team accountable to not recreating or mimicking oppressive or harmful systems or experience for groups engaging with The Community Nest.
  • The Advisory Collective will at first sit within the remit of The Community Nest, acting in an advisory capacity and later moving into a strategic function within the 5 year timeline outlined.
  • Where the panel’s input is not taken forward, the team will explain why.

Membership
Attributes

  • Strong commitment to Social Change Nest values and our purpose.
  • Lived experience of the social issues The Community Nest groups are engaged in fighting.
  • We are particularly keen to receive applications from members of communities experiencing economic, environmental or social injustice, and people working for change as part of these communities.
  • We strongly encourage applications from: women and non-binary people, those from Global Majority backgrounds, and members of other marginalised groups.
  • Where needed SCN can cover interpreters, personal carer, childcare and other costs to facilitate panel members’ participation.
  • Advisory Collective members must be aged 18 or over.
  • We welcome interest from stakeholders both within our fiscally hosted network and from our wider ecosystem but will reserve at least 60% of the membership to fiscally hosted community leaders.
  • For the first two years of the Advisory Collective, members must be based in the UK.

Cadence

  • The Advisory Collective meets 4 times a year for 2.5 hour long meetings.
  • One meeting a year will be held in-person, with the Social Change Nest covering board (where needed) and travel costs.
  • Meetings will be scheduled at times that work best for Advisory Collective members.

Honorariums

  • An honorarium of £350 per day is available for Advisory Collective members as an acknowledgement of the time they put into preparing for and attending the Advisory Collective meetings.
  • The Community Nest’s Payment For Involvement Playbook defines its approach to honorariums.
  • In the interest of transparency, all honorariums will be paid using the Open Collective platform.
  • The Social Change Nest is committed to supporting participants to accept payment without disrupting their social benefits where relevant.

Recruitment

Advisory Collective Members

Please review The Advisory Collective Terms of Reference for more information about the role.

The Community Nest Team and a small group of civil society peers external to the organisation will jointly review applications. We are committed to following a transparent process that enables us to bring together the diverse  skills, perspectives and experiences found across our ecosystem.

We will hold a question & answer session about the Advisory Collective on 25th August 2026 at 12:00-13:00.

If you would welcome an informal chat about this opportunity, please reach out to the team on community@thesocialchangenest.org

Please submit your application by 22nd September 2026 at 23:59.

VOLUNTEER REVIEW PANEL

For those who are interested in getting involved, but perhaps can’t commit to regular input and guidance, we also invite community members to support with the “recruitment” and co-hold suitability discussions or interviews alongside a member of the team.

We anticipate that recruitment volunteers will need to set aside 2.5 days for preparation and interviews. Recruitment volunteers will receive an honorarium of £250 per day for their work. For those in receipt of benefits, this work counts as service user involvement so support will be provided for participants to accept payment without disrupting their benefits.

To express your interest, email community@thesocialchangenest.org by 1st September 2026 and we’ll arrange a short call.

We will be holding a separate Q&A session about the Volunteer Review Panel on 26th August 2026 at 12:00-13:00 for anyone interested in applying.

Using AI in your application

We recognise that AI tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of professional life, including the job application process. While we neither encourage nor discourage the use of AI in your application, we believe it’s important for candidates to be aware of both the potential benefits and drawbacks. Here are some key points to consider:

Potential Benefits of Using AI

  1. Reduces barriers: AI can help individuals with disabilities or those who are not native English speakers in the application process.
  2. Guidance: Can provide suggestions on what you might want to include in your response.
  3. Feedback: Can offer insights on how you could improve your responses.

Potential Drawbacks of Using AI

  1. Generic content: Can result in similar wording appearing across multiple applications, making them feel less unique.
  2. Inaccuracies: AI is sometimes overly creative with facts and may provide inaccurate information.
  3. Loss of personal touch: Your individual experiences and personality might not shine through if AI is relied on too heavily.
  4. Environmental impact:  AI consumes significant environmental resources with every prompt contributing to this.

Remember, the most successful applications are those that genuinely reflect your skills, experiences, and personality. Whether you choose to use AI tools or not, make sure you check your responses thoroughly and ensure that your application accurately represents you as a candidate.
