How to create a Safeguarding Policy

If you’re providing direct support to beneficiaries, or have regular contact with the general public in the activities you deliver, it’s a good idea to have a safeguarding policy. This is especially important if you’re working with children or vulnerable people.

An unconstituted volunteer group doesn’t have the same legal obligations as a registered charity, but it’s still important to make sure you are carrying out your work in a way that protects everyone involved from harm. We recommend reading this guide by NCVO.

Even if you have processes in place to keep your volunteers and the people you help safe, it’s a good idea to put a single document together detailing the policy. This will enable you to be completely transparent about what measures you put in place. You may also need to have a formalised policy if you’re applying for grant funding.
